Reaching Out To Prospective Wildcats: A&S Ambassador Charlie Fieseler
Charlie Fieseler is an undergraduate student majoring in Physics and Mathematics. Charlie is also a member of A&S Ambassadors, a team of undergraduate students that visit neighboring grade schools to discuss what it's like to be a UK student. Having a Blast: Volcano Demonstrations with Peter Idstein and Students
During the last week of March, 2012, Peter Idstein showed his classes how volcanoes erupt. Since there aren't any in Kentucky, Idstein used trash cans filled with water as the 'volcanoes,' and liquid nitrogen as the catalyst for the eruption. Christine Smith is a graduate student in the Department of Geography. A recipient of a grant from the National Science Foundation, Smith has been spending months in Egypt learning Arabic and conducting research since 2010.
History Students Enrich Kentucky Historical Databases
Students serve as history-detectives, acquiring information from community leaders, local archivists and historians from across the U.S., to accumulate relevant information never analyzed concurrently. They developed and debated historical interpretations of the primary sources they found and engaged in both online and classroom discussions.
UK Students Awarded Public Policy Internships in D.C.
Sophomore Aleksey Graboviy and junior Nolan Jackson have been awarded Henry Clay Internships in Public Policy by the Kentucky Society of Washington. The internships will give Graboviy and Jackson the opportunity to work in an office of a member of the Kentucky congressional delegation or an office of the executive branch in Washington, D.C.
Appalachian Food Preservation: Lisa Conley
Spring is on its way! Gardens will be growing, and fruits and vegetables will be ready to eat - or preserve, pickle, freeze or dry! Lisa Conley is a graduate student in the Department of Sociology, and has been working on a documentary film about home food preservation methods in Appalachia since 2009.
Wildcat Wheels with Sara Ailshire
Sara Ailshire is a senior majoring in Anthropology. Sara is also a mechanic at Wildcat Wheels, UK's community bike shop and bicycle library. Wildcat Wheels allows students and faculty rent bikes, or use the shops work stands, tools, and expertise to maintain their own bicycles. Arts & Sciences' Cheyenne Hohman recently sat down with Sara to discuss her work at Wildcat Wheels, and how it has informed her ambitions after she graduates from UK.
